Scotland’s Liam Dunster defeated Ireland’s Ronan McCarthy in a see-saw final 6-4 to take the Select Car Leasing Champions Cup title, staged at Rileys Solihull.
In a titanic tussle between the evergreen McCarthy and the rising star of the IPA Dunster, which was held in the stunning brand new IPA playing arena, it was McCarthy who was the quickest out of the blocks, taking what most spectators thought would be an unassailable 4-1 lead with some faultless blackball pool.
Dunster had other ideas, and with some clinical finishing coupled with several dry breaks from McCarthy, he took 5 frames on the spin for a famous victory, and one that confirms his place as one of the very best players in the World right now. Dunster takes home a cheque for £5,000 and becomes the first ever winner of the latest televised contest that has been added to the IPA calendar.
In the first ever event of its kind, 64 players set out at the start of the campaign with every match televised live on Freesports. The IPA professionals mixed it with several amateur qualifiers, battling down over 20 weeks to leave our 4 semi finalists. Together with Dunster and McCarthy, Scott Gillespie and 2015 World Champion Jack Whelan all had an eye on the title.
Dunster overcame Gillespie in the all Scotland battle, coming back again from an early deficit, whilst McCarthy defeated Whelan in a classic match.
Our thanks go to event sponsors Select Car Leasing and venue hosts Rileys for making the event such a huge success, and we are delighted to announce the event will be staged again in 2019.
